Rural home to double in size

16 February 2012

We have obtained planning permission for a significant extension to a rural property in Scaynes Hill. Our clients have lived in the property for a number of years but now require further accommodation for their growing family. Thinking long term, our scheme will improve the appearance and create the flexibility needed to give them a ‘home for the future’.  This will also include making substantial improvements to the building’s energy performance as well as the spatial layout.

The eco refurbishment of the existing property will reduce ongoing running costs and carbon use. Photovoltaic panels are being considered along with solar water heating and a new energy efficient gas boiler. There will also be upgrades to insulation.

The flat roofed dormers and porch will be removed allowing the existing linear building to be extended along the south flank wall with two matching south facing gabled wings incorporating glass walls to maximise views to the south and use passive solar energy with a contemporary interior offering the flexibility our clients need.

Working with DMH Stallard planning consultants, we negotiated with the local authority to secure permission for this complicated application. There was local support but due to the size of the proposal the planning authority needed to be convinced of the benefits of the scheme.

Lindfield Rural Parish Council were clearly supportive of the design and commented to the planning authority  ‘On viewing the proposals we were very impressed with how the architect has melded the design into the existing building and surroundings’.

This permission will see the property double in area and volume but the character of the original building and its relationship with the adjacent property is maintained.
